About the Author
Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in England in 1849. She was only three years old when her father died. Consequently, her family faced financial issues and moved to America in 1865. It was there to support her family that Burnett started publishing her early works in magazines. This sharpened her writing skills and she wrote her first novel That Lass O Lorrie s in 1877. There was no stopping her then. She wrote many fictional and dramatic works of which most enduring are her two children novels A Little Princess and The Secret Garden. Burnett died in 1924.

About the Author
One of the leading British writers and intellectual of the twentieth century Virginia Woolf was born in London on 25 January 1882. She began publishing her work to both general and critical acclaim in her early twenties and became associated with Bloomsbury Circle, an influential group of English modernist writers, intellectuals, philosophers and artists in early twentieth century. Best remembered for the lyrical quality of her prose Woolf wrote many novels and essays all bearing the modernist trends of the Circle. Her works have been translated in over 50 languages around the world. However, she was not very lucky in health matters and suffered from the bouts of mental illness throughout her life. She perished by drowning during one such attack on 28 March 1941.

About the Author
Eric Arthur Blair (George Orwell) was born on June 25, 1903 in Bihar, India. He was educated in England. At 19, Orwell joined the Imperial Police. He was posted in Burma (Myanmar) where he lived until his resignation. Afterwards, he stayed briefly in London and then spent two years in Paris where he worked as a journalist. Upon his return to England, Orwell worked succinctly as a schoolteacher and then went on to fight for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. He was wounded in the war and went to Morocco for six months. Orwell contracted tuberculosis in the following years and although he continued his life in the same fashion, he was never ever fit. He died on January 21, 1950.
Throughout his life, Orwell fought vigorously against totalitarianism and social injustice. He was a keen observer and made good use of his pen wherever her went. His first novel Burmese Days evokes the memories of Colonial Burma of his time. Down and Out in Paris and London depicts his struggling years in two cities. The Road to Wigan Pier is an account of the poor and poverty during his years in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Similarly, Homage to Catalonia and Coming Up for Air commemorate Spanish Civil War and his years in Morocco respectively. In addition, Orwell profusely contributed articles to a number of periodicals. However, his greatest moment came when he penned down Animal Farm, a political satire against the fascist Soviet regime written allegorically during the Second World War. The dystopian 1984 followed Animal Farm and together they brought Orwell enduring worldwide fame. L. M. Montgomery (Lucy Maud Montgomery) was born at Clifton, Prince Edward Island, Canada in 1874. In 1889, Nietzsche suffered a mental breakdown. Eleven years later, he died on August 25, 1900, in Weimar, German Empire.

About the Author
Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was a British writer who had a strong love for horses and became quite sensitive to their nature and behavior. After a childhood injury, she was confined to her house as an invalid and got around largely by horse-drawn carriages. Though, she had difficulty in walking, she could drive a carriage. She spent her last years writing the children’s classic Black Beauty (1877), a fictional autobiography of a gentle, highbred horse. She died just five months after her book was published.

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow on November 11, 1821. He influenced a number of modern philosophers and writers including Anton Chekov, George Orwell and Jean-Paul Sartre. He is best known for his novels Notes from Underground (1864), Crime and Punishment (1866), The Idiot (serialized from 1868 to 1869) The Possessed or otherwise known as Demons (serial wised from 1871. to 1872) and The Brothers Karamazov (serial wised from 1879 to 1880). Dostoyevsky died on February 9, 1881 at the age of 59, in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

One of all time literary favorites, Jane Austen was born at Steventon rectory, England on December 16, 1775. She started writing poems, stories and plays as early as 1787 which she compiled in three bound notebooks. Those early works were later published as Juvenilia. Then, she wrote Lady Susan, a novella in epistolary form. However, it remained unpublished for a long time. Having written Lady Susan, she penned down six novels, four of which were published during her life as follows: Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815). Northanger Abbey (1818) and Persuasion (1818) were published posthumously. Two of her novels The Watsons and Sanditon, though published later on, remained unfinished. Austen died on July 18, 1817.

Justin BrienAlbert Camus was a French-Algerian writer, philosopher and journalist. He was born in Mondovi, French Algeria on November 7, 1913. Although not trained as a philosopher, he contributed towards the avant-garde twentieth-century philosophical ideas of Absurdism in the form of essays, novels, reviews and articles. He also became active in the resistance against the colonial French government and served as editor-in-chief of the newspaper Combat from 1944 to 1947.
Camus established himself as a fiction writer with his three novels: The Stranger (1942), The Plague (1947), and The Fall (1956). His philosophical books The Myth of Sisyphus (1942), and The Rebel (1951) proved him to be a forceful thinker. Because of his formidable impact on the world of letters in the second half of the twentieth century, he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in 1957 for illuminating the problems of the human conscience. Jonathan Swift was an Anglo-Irish author, poet and essayist. He was born in Dublin in 1667. He received a bachelors in arts from Trinity College, Dublin. He was famous for his outstanding satire and produced impressive works such as A Tale of a Tub, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity, Gulliver’s Travels, among others. However, it was Gulliver’s Travels that won him enduring fame. He published most of his writings under pseudonyms. John Ruskin called him one of the three most influential people. Swift also worked as a statesman’s assistant and engaged in political pamphleteering. In his later years, he became a cleric as dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. He died in 1745 and was buried next to his lifelong love Esther Johnson inside Dublin as St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Johanna Spyri (1827-1901) was a Swiss short story writer and novelist famous for her writings for both adults and children. She was born at Hazel, Switzerland. After getting married to a lawyer, she shifted to Zurich. She missed her rural life and liked it more than her urban surroundings and, therefore, she started celebrating the countryside in her work. In 1884, her husband and her only child died. This tragedy turned her towards philanthropy. She continued both her creative and humanitarian work till her death. Her services were honored in 1951 and 2009 by the issuance, respectively, of a postage stamp and a coin bearing her picture.
