Gulliver’s Travels ,(Reading Classic)- Writer: Jonathan Swift:
About the Author
Jonathan Swift was an Anglo-Irish author, poet and essayist. He was born in Dublin in 1667. He received a bachelors in arts from Trinity College, Dublin. He was famous for his outstanding satire and produced impressive works such as A Tale of a Tub, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity, Gulliver’s Travels, among others. However, it was Gulliver’s Travels that won him enduring fame. He published most of his writings under pseudonyms. John Ruskin called him one of the three most influential people. Similarly, George Orwell declared him the most admirable person in spite of having disagreements on various matters. Swift also worked as a statesman’s assistant and engaged in political pamphleteering. In his later years, he became a cleric as dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. He died in 1745 and was buried next to his lifelong love Esther Johnson inside Dublin as St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

About the Author
Johanna Spyri (1827-1901) was a Swiss short story writer and novelist famous for her writings for both adults and children. She was born at Hazel, Switzerland. After getting married to a lawyer, she shifted to Zurich. She missed her rural life and liked it more than her urban surroundings and, therefore, she started celebrating the countryside in her work. In 1884, her husband and her only child died. This tragedy turned her towards philanthropy. She continued both her creative and humanitarian work till her death. Her services were honored in 1951 and 2009 by the issuance, respectively, of a postage stamp and a coin bearing her picture.

About the Author
Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) on 30 December 1865. Having spent his early childhood in India Kipling went to study in England but returned to India at the age of 18 and joined as an assistant editor the Civil and Military Gazette, a small newspaper in Lahore. It was during his Lahore days that Kipling published his first book. He drew inspiration for most of his writings including the famous Jungle Books from India. He was a writer par excellence and wrote both prose and verse for adults and children alike prolifically. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. Kipling died in London on 18 January 1936.

Mrs Azzam is the niece of the late Dr Abdul Wahab Azzam, who was rector of Cairo University, founder and first Rector of Riyadh Uni- versity, and prominent Muslim writer. She is also the daughter-in-law of the late Dr Abdur Rahman Azzam, founder of the Arab League and author of the Eternal Message of Muhammad. Mrs Azzam was born in Cairo and is a graduate of the Faculty of Arts and Literature, Cairo University. She has lived with her husband, Dr Omar Azzam, in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and France, and is now living in Cambridge, England, where her four children are receiving their education.

She took a BA in comparative religion from Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, New York, and has an MA in Education from Michigan University. She lived in Egypt for over ten years and now lives with her husband and two children in Cambridge, England.

Sir James Matthew Barrie was a Scottish author. He was born on May 9, 1860, in Angus, Scotland. Barrie is most famous as the creator of Peter Pan, a free-spirited young boy who refuses to grow up. His notable works include The Little Minister (1891), Jess (1898) and The Little White Bird (1902). Most of his early works are marked by the Scottish dialect, humour and sentimentality. Barrie also wrote plays even though they were rejected by critics. However, he finally gained success with Quality Street (1901), a four-part comedy and The Admirable Crichon (1902). But Barrie s fame rested with his novel Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn t Grow Up (1904). Barrie was made a baronet by King George V in 1913. He died on June 19, 1937, in London, England.
