About the Author

Penelope Johnstone holds a doctorate in the history of Arabic medicine and herbals. She has undertaken fieldwork in the Syria-Jordan region and spent a year with the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine, Oxford. Having lived and travelled extensively in the Middle East, she now teaches Arabic at Oxfor University.
