About the Author
Albert Camus was a French-Algerian writer, philosopher and journalist. He was born in Mondovi, French Algeria on November 7, 1913. Although not trained as a philosopher, he contributed towards the avant-garde twentieth-century philosophical ideas of Absurdism in the form of essays, novels, reviews and articles. He also became active in the resistance against the colonial French government and served as editor-in-chief of the newspaper Combat from 1944 to 1947.
Camus established himself as a fiction writer with his three novels: The Stranger (1942), The Plague (1947), and
The Fall (1956). His philosophical books The Myth of Sisyphus (1942), and The Rebel (1951) proved him to be a forceful thinker. Because of his formidable impact on the world of letters in the second half of the twentieth century, he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in 1957 for illuminating “the problems of the human conscience.” He was only 44 years old at the time. During his stay in Paris, he became a part of the American expatriate circle of Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound. F Scott Fitzgerald and Ford Maddox Ford. He made good use of his multifarious life experience in his writings and penned many great novels and short stories. In 1954, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Not many years later, he committed suicide in 1961.

Kafka burnt about 90% of his work. Of what survived only a little was published during his life and the rest was published posthumously. Many of his writings including his novel Amerika remained unfinished when he died prematurely at the age of 40.

Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher and a cultural critic. He was born on October 15, 1844, in Rocken, Saxony, Kingdom of Prussia. In 1889, Nietzsche suffered a mental breakdown. Eleven years later, he died on August 25, 1900, in Weimar, German Empire.

Kenneth Grahame was a Scottish writer of children’s literature. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. He wanted to study at Oxford University, but he couldn’t afford it due to his financial situation. He had to take up banking as a profession to address his financial woes but he kept on honing his writing skills and became a prolific writer for children.
During his youth, he wrote short stories for periodicals in London. After a ten-year long period of struggle, he published his triumphant book The Wind in the Willows in 1908, now one of the classics of children’s literature. His fame as a writer of children’s literature grew instantly after this book. The popularity of the book also caused his previously neglected works to be collected and published.
