He is often seen as a predecessor to late modern thinkers like Marx and Freud, because of his psychological analyses of false consciousness. He proposed many original theories positing an alternative morality and ideas which would bring forth a cultural renewal. His notable works include The Birth of Tragedy out of the Spirit of Music (1872), The Gay Science (1882), Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1883–5), Beyond Good and Evil (1886), On the Genealogy of Morality (1887), Twilight of the Idols (1888) and The Wagner Case (1888). In 1889, Nietzsche suffered a mental breakdown. Eleven years later, he died on August 25, 1900, in Weimar, German Empire.

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow on November 11, 1821. About the Author
F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of the great American authors of the twentieth century, was born in 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was at Princeton University when he left it in 1917 to join the army. During his time in the army he wrote The Romantic Egoist which was rejected when he submitted it for publication. The publisher remarked that it might be submitted again after revision. Fitzgerald revised The Romantic Egoist in 1919 when he was discharged from the army and it was published as This Side of Paradise in March 1920. While still in the army, Fitzgerald met Zelda Sayre in 1918 who became Zelda Fitzgerald in April 1920. In October 1921, they had a daughter, their only child. In 1924, Fitzgeralds traveled to France where he wrote The Great Gatsby. They returned to the United States in 1925. In addition to the above two novels, Fitzgerald wrote two more novels, one incomplete novel, many volumes of short stories, a drama and a collection of nonfiction writings. He died suddenly of a heart attack in 1940.

Oscar Fingal O ‘Flaherty Wills Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford where, a disciple of Pater, he founded an aesthetic cult. In 1884 he married Constance Lloyd, and his two sons were born in 1885 and 1886. His novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), and social comedies Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892), A Woman of No Importance (1893), An Ideal Husband (1895), and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), established his reputation. In 1895, following his libel action against the Marquess of Queensberry, Wilde was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for homosexual conduct, as a result of which he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol (1898), and his confessional letter De Prefunds (1905). On his release from prison in 1897 he lived in obscurity in Europe, and died in Paris in 1900.

Having spent his early childhood in India Kipling went to study in England but returned to India at the age of 18 and joined as an assistant editor the Civil and Military Gazette, a small newspaper in Lahore. It was during his Lahore days that Kipling published his first book. He drew inspiration for most of his writings including the famous Jungle Books from India. He was a writer par excellence and wrote both prose and verse for adults and children alike prolifically. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. Kipling died in London on 18 January 1936.

One of the greatest writers of all time, Anton Chekhov was born in Taganrog, Russia on 29 January 1860. He started writing in his early life to support his poor family, having no idea that it d finally pave for him the way to become a celebrated short story writer and playwright. Also, his choice of profession as a doctor put him in close contact with Russian society which in turn helped him to produce fine literature. His most famous short stories include “The Steppe”, “The Lady with the Dog”, “Ward No. 6” and “The Duel” etc. Similarly, his most famous plays are Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, The Seagull and The Cherry Orchard. Chekhov caught tuberculosis in his mid-twenties and having fought it for nearly half of his life, he died of it on 15 July 1904 when he was staying with his wife in Badenweiler, a German spa town. He was buried in Moscow.

Antoine De Saint-Exupery was born in 1900 in Lyon. In 1921, he began his training as a pilot By 1926, he had became one of the pioneers of international postal flight. In 1935 he embarked on a record-breaking attempt to fly from Paris to Saigon. Nineteen hours into the flight, his plane crashed in the Sahara desert. He survived the crash but spent three days battling dehydration, limited food and hallucinations. On the fourth day, the was rescued. In part, this experience was the inspiration for The Little Prince. He continued to fly until World War II, during which he took self-imposed exile. On 31 July 1944, he disappeared over the Mediterranean while flying a reconnaissance mission.
