The War Of the Worlds,(Reading Classic): Writer: H.G.Wells
About the Author
H. G. Wells (Herbert George Wells) was born in Kent, England on 21 September 1866. Often called the Father of Science Fiction, a distinction which he shares with Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback, Wells was the inventor of the Plausible Impossible in science fiction, a technique of portraying incredible as credible. He was a prolific writer who not only wrote sci-fi but also explored other themes in writing. His other works include social realistic fiction and books on history and politics. He authored over hundred books of which many remain extremely popular today. He died in London on 13 August 1946.

About the Author
Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher and a cultural critic. He was born on October 15, 1844, in Rocken, Saxony, Kingdom of Prussia. His works criticise the traditional European morality, religious values as well as conventional philosophical ideas associated with modernity. He is often seen as a predecessor to late modern thinkers like Marx and Freud, because of his psychological analyses of false consciousness. He proposed many original theories positing an alternative morality and ideas which would bring forth a cultural renewal. His notable works include The Birth of Tragedy out of the Spirit of Music (1872), The Gay Science (1882), Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1883–5), Beyond Good and Evil (1886), On the Genealogy of Morality (1887), Twilight of the Idols (1888) and The Wagner Case (1888). In 1889, Nietzsche suffered a mental breakdown. Eleven years later, he died on August 25, 1900, in Weimar, German Empire.

About the Author
Kenneth Grahame was a Scottish writer of children’s literature. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. He wanted to study at Oxford University, but he couldn’t afford it due to his financial situation. He had to take up banking as a profession to address his financial woes but he kept on honing his writing skills and became a prolific writer for children.
During his youth, he wrote short stories for periodicals in London. After a ten-year long period of struggle, he published his triumphant book The Wind in the Willows in 1908, now one of the classics of children’s literature. His fame as a writer of children’s literature grew instantly after this book. The popularity of the book also caused his previously neglected works to be collected and published. The Wind in the Willows and his other work The Reluctant Dragon were later adapted for film and stage. Grahame died in Pangbourne, in 1932.SKU: 77263 -

About the Author
Frank L. Baum (1856-1919) was born in New York. He enjoyed making up stories, particularly for his own children. The Wizard of Oz, based on their favorite bedtime story about a land of Oz, was published in 1900 and it immediately became a huge international success. He wrote several sequels and numerous other kinds of books under a pseudonym.

About the Author
Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-98), grew up in Cheshire in the village of Daresbury, the son of a parish priest. He was a brilliant mathematician, a skilled photographer and a meticulous letter and diary writer. Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, inspired by Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church in Oxford, was published in 1865, followed by Through the Looking-Glass in 1871. He wrote numerous stories and poems for children including the nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark and fairy stories Sylvie and Bruno.

About the Author
One of the leading British writers and intellectuals of the twentieth century Virginia Woolf was born in London on 25 January 1882. She began publishing her work to both general and critical acclaim in her early twenties and became associated with Bloomsbury Circle, an influential group of English modernist writers, intellectuals, philosophers and artists in early twentieth century. Best remembered for the lyrical quality of her prose Woolf wrote many novels and essays all bearing the modernist trends of the Circle. Her works have been translated in over 50 languages around the world. However, she was not very lucky in health matters and suffered from the bouts of mental illness throughout her life. She perished by drowning during one such attack on 28 March 1941.

Susan Coolidge is the pen name of the American author of children s literature Sarah Chauncey Woolsey. She was born into a wealthy family in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1835. She served as a nurse during the American Civil War. After the war, she took to writing. She was a prolific writer who produced novels, short stories, poems, and translations, many of which were posthumously published. Her works have been translated into several major languages. She is best known for What Katy Did, her notable series of classic juvenile novels which she wrote as What Katy Did or What Katy Did at Home (1872), What Katy Did at School (1873), What Katy Did Next (1886), Clover (1888), and In the High Valley (1890). Coolidge remained single throughout her life. She died at her family home in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1905.

She was also a fine poet. She loved nature and animals. However, she led an overall sedentary life, her closest relationship being with Anne, her younger sister. She died of tuberculosis when she was only 30.
