He made good use of his multifarious life experience in his writings and penned many great novels and short stories. In 1954, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Not many years later, he committed suicide in 1961.

Best remembered for the lyrical quality of her prose Woolf wrote many novels and essays all bearing the modernist trends of the Circle. Her works have been translated in over 50 languages around the world. However, she was not very lucky in health matters and suffered from the bouts of mental illness throughout her life. She perished by drowning during one such attack on 28 March 1941.

About the Author
Eric Arthur Blair (George Orwell) was born on June 25, 1903 in Bihar, India. He was educated in England. At 19, Orwell joined the Imperial Police. He was posted in Burma (Myanmar) where he lived until his resignation. Afterwards, he stayed briefly in London and then spent two years in Paris where he worked as a journalist. Upon his return to England, Orwell worked succinctly as a schoolteacher and then went on to fight for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. He was wounded in the war and went to Morocco for six months. Orwell contracted tuberculosis in the following years and although he continued his life in the same fashion, he was never ever fit. He died on January 21, 1950.
Throughout his life, Orwell fought vigorously against totalitarianism and social injustice. He was a keen observer and made good use of his pen wherever her went. His first novel Burmese Days evokes the memories of Colonial Burma of his time. Down and Out in Paris and London depicts his struggling years in two cities. The Road to Wigan Pier is an account of the poor and poverty during his years in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Similarly, Homage to Catalonia and Coming Up for Air commemorate Spanish Civil War and his years in Morocco respectively. In addition, Orwell profusely contributed articles to a number of periodicals. However, his greatest moment came when he penned down Animal Farm, a political satire against the fascist Soviet regime written allegorically during the Second World War. The dystopian 1984 followed Animal Farm and together they brought Orwell enduring worldwide fame. About the Author
Sylvia Plath was born on October 27, 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts. She studied at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Later, she went on a Fulbright scholarship to study at Newnham College at the University of Cambridge, England. There she met Ted Hughes at a party in February 1956 and they married in June of the same year. They lived in the United States and later in England and had two children. Plath spent most of her adult life in depression. She made many unsuccessful attempts at her life and finally committed suicide on February 11, 1963.
Plath was an exceptionally gifted poet and is frequently dubbed as one of the best woman poets of the western world. She won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for The Collected Poems in 1982. She wrote fiction too and her semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar is one of the most read novels today.

Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher and a cultural critic. He was born on October 15, 1844, in Rocken, Saxony, Kingdom of Prussia. One of all time literary favorites, Jane Austen was born at Steventon rectory, England on December 16, 1775. She started writing poems, stories and plays as early as 1787 which she compiled in three bound notebooks. Those early works were later published as Juvenilia. Then, she wrote Lady Susan, a novella in epistolary form. However, it remained unpublished for a long time. Having written Lady Susan, she penned down six novels, four of which were published during her life as follows: Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815). Northanger Abbey (1818) and Persuasion (1818) were published posthumously. Two of her novels The Watsons and Sanditon, though published later on, remained unfinished. Austen died on July 18, 1817.

Eric Berne (1910-1970) was a Canadian psychiatrist and the creator of Transactional Analysis. He got his certification in surgery from McGill University Medical School in 1935 but started his career in psychology. From 1938 to 1943, he served at different sanitaria. Berne started serving the US military as a psychiatrist in 1943. After World War II, Berne moved to California where he continued teaching and researching psychiatry. He published a seminal paper titled ‘Transactional Analysis: A New and Effective Method of Group Therapy’ which proposed a new approach towards psychotherapy. He also founded the International Transactional Analysis Association around this time. In 1964, he published Games People Play, which became an international bestseller. Berne theorised that an individual’s psychological behaviour is the sum total of their social transactions. From 1964 to his death in 1970, he dedicated his life to research in psychiatry.
