About the Author
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow on November 11, 1821. He is known for his profound understanding of human psychology and his ability to bring forth the darkest realms of human nature. Dostoyevsky inspired a number of modern movements including Existentialism, literary criticism and many schools of psychology and theology. He influenced a number of modern philosophers and writers including Anton Chekov, George Orwell and Jean-Paul Sartre. He is best known for his novels Notes from Underground (1864), Crime and Punishment (1866), The Idiot (serialized from 1868 to 1869) The Possessed or otherwise known as Demons (serialized from 1871 to 1872) and The Brothers Karamazov (serialized from 1879 to 1880). Dostoyevsky died on February 9, 1881 at the age of 59, in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924), one of the greatest writers of all time, was a German language writer. He spent a disturbed early life, mainly on account of a selfish and domineering father, which, nevertheless, helped shape his literature and he gave us such masterpieces as The Trial, Metamorphosis and In the Penal Colony. His novels and short stories are considered a blend of realism and fantasy and frequently explore the themes of guilt, alienation and existential anxiety. His letters are another literary marvel. Kafka burnt about 90% of his work. Of what survived only a little was published during his life and the rest was published posthumously. Many of his writings including his novel Amerika remained unfinished when he died prematurely at the age of 40.

Mary Anne Evans, more famously known by her pen name George Eliot, was a nineteenth-century English novelist, journalist, translator and poet. She was born on November 22, 1819, in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Eliot was deeply influenced by Ludwig Feuerbach and Auguste Comte after the loss of her Christian faith. She had a cynical view of life and her work represented the cases of social outsiders. She wrote on griminess and impoverishment of rural life and small-town oppression. She was one of the early writers to psychologically analyse her characters in modern fiction. Her notable works include Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (1871-1872) and Daniel Deronda (1876). She died on December 22, 1880, in London.

Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher and a cultural critic. He was born on October 15, 1844, in Rocken, Saxony, Kingdom of Prussia. He is often seen as a predecessor to late modern thinkers like Marx and Freud, because of his psychological analyses of false consciousness. In 1889, Nietzsche suffered a mental breakdown. Eleven years later, he died on August 25, 1900, in Weimar, German Empire.

Kenneth Grahame was a Scottish writer of children’s literature. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. He wanted to study at Oxford University, but he couldn’t afford it due to his financial situation. He had to take up banking as a profession to address his financial woes but he kept on honing his writing skills and became a prolific writer for children.
During his youth, he wrote short stories for periodicals in London. After a ten-year long period of struggle, he published his triumphant book The Wind in the Willows in 1908, now one of the classics of children’s literature. His fame as a writer of children’s literature grew instantly after this book. The popularity of the book also caused his previously neglected works to be collected and published.
