Susan Coolidge is the pen name of the American author of children s literature Sarah Chauncey Woolsey. She was born into a wealthy family in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1835. She served as a nurse during the American Civil War. After the war, she took to writing. She was a prolific writer who produced novels, short stories, poems, and translations, many of which were posthumously published. Her works have been translated into several major languages. She is best known for What Katy Did, her notable series of classic juvenile novels which she wrote as What Katy Did or What Katy Did at Home (1872), What Katy Did at School (1873), What Katy Did Next (1886), Clover (1888), and In the High Valley (1890). Coolidge remained single throughout her life. She died at her family home in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1905.
